No. 1 LSU dismantled No. 4 Oklahoma in a 63-28 victory in the Peach Bowl semifinal game Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow and his Tigers slashed the Sooners early and advance to play Clemson in the National Championship game on January 13.
Burrow Has Career Day
Joe Burrow completed 29-of-39 passes for 493 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also ran in a touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Justin Jefferson caught 14 passes for 227 yards and 4 touchdowns. The seven touchdown passes by Burrow and the four touchdown receptions by Jefferson all came before halftime and each tied a bowl game record.
LSU’s Thaddeus Moss and Terrace Marshall also had big games for the Tigers. Moss caught 4 passes for 99 yards and 1 touchdown. Marshall caught 6 passes for 80 yards and 2 touchdowns. Chris Curry led LSU with 90 rushing yards on 16 carries.
LSU’s Offense Dominates
The Tigers outgained Oklahoma, 692-322, and set Peach Bowl, New Year’s Six and CFP records. This is a game LSU fans will remember forever and will go down as one of their best statistical games of all-time.
Defensively, LSU was led by K’Lavon Chaisson who had six tackles including two sacks. He was named the Peach Bowl’s Defensive MVP after the game. Jacob Phillips and Patrick Queen each had 8 tackles for the Tigers.
Sooners Struggle Again
The Sooners have made the College Football Playoff four times in the six-year history, but have yet to win a game. Jalen Hurts and the Sooner offense struggled against the LSU defense.
Hurts ran for two touchdowns but gained just 43 yards on the ground. The Tigers only allowed Hurts to complete 15-of-31 passes for 217 yards. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb led the Sooners with four catches for 119 yards.
Clemson is on Deck
The undefeated Tigers need one more win to complete the storybook season. LSU is hoping to win its first CFP title and first national title since the 2007 season. This will be their toughest test of the season going against Clemson (14-0).
Clemson is riding a 29-game win streak and will look to defend their title. They are trying to win their second consecutive championship and third of the CFP era.
