Denton Guyer went into the 6A Division 2 State Championship game arguably as the favorites to win it all. Their offense was hitting on all cylinders throughout the season and playoffs. They were averaging 511 yards and 46 points per game and were on a 10-game win streak.
During their first offensive possession at AT&T Stadium against Austin Westlake, Eli Stowers, Denton Guyer’s star quarterback, went down with a knee injury and was carted off the field. He did not return and the injury was diagnosed as a PCL tear on his left knee.
As a result, the team struggled the rest of the game and only managed 239 yards of total offense. Only 6 passing yards were gained and the team was shutout for the first time all season. Austin Westlake won the game 24-0.
TEXAS A&M COMMIT
Stowers, a 6’4 200-pound dual-threat quarterback in the 2021 recruiting class, is committed to Texas A&M. He was definitely the driver and engine behind this high-powered offense. You hate to see something like this happen, especially in their biggest game of the year and playing for a state championship.
Stowers was interviewed after the game and he was more concerned about the seniors on the team that fell short of their goal as opposed to how the injury will affect him. This shows you the type of team player and leader he is and the intangibles that help make him great.
2019 FINAL STATS
Despite the injury and the unfortunate situation, Stowers still had an outstanding season and put up incredible numbers. He completed 65.6% of his passes and threw for 2,969 yards. His touchdown to interception ratio was 36 to 4. Stowers also rushed for 1,165 yards and scored 11 touchdowns on the ground. His 4,134 total yards of offense was nothing short of spectacular.
Athletes are faced with adversity and obstacles throughout their career and they have to fight through these challenges mentally and physically to overcome them. It is all about how you respond and bounce back that helps you grow as a player and person.
We have no doubt that Stowers will come back stronger and better next season. He will definitely be hungry and motivated to get back to AT&T Stadium during his senior year to finish the job before he heads to College Station.
