As a defensive coordinator, when you can leave your star cornerback alone on an island against a wide receiver, it allows you to get creative in defensive play calling. You can call more man-on-man coverage, allowing the defense to aggressively blitz at will, even having the safety come down into the box to help defend the run game.
Rising junior cornerback Laterrance Welch from Acadiana High School in Louisiana has the rare ability to blanket opposing team’s best wide receivers, freeing up the secondary a great deal. Welsh has played a huge part in Acadiana’s recent football success and has a bright future in store for him.
Standing at 6’1” and weighing 175-pounds, Laterrance Welsh has the ideal body type to be a star college player. After Welsh’s sophomore year he’s already a 4 star recruit, and is regarded a Top 10 player overall in Louisiana in the class of 2022.
Welsh is an extremely aggressive open-field tackler, has good hands to make tough contested interceptions, and the speed to close in on running backs and receivers in the open field. Last year alone, Welsh recorded 53 tackles, 24 pass breakups, and 5 interceptions.
Recruiting Success
On the recruiting trail, Welsh is one of the most heavily recruited rising high school juniors in the country. As of now, Welsh holds offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, among other big time Power 5 conference schools. There don’t seem to be any schools in the lead, as Welsh still has two more years of high school football left, and will surely be receiving more offers as he goes. Welsh also can’t take any visits to any schools either due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
2019 State Champs
An impressive aspect of Laterrance Welch’s game is that he shines under the spotlight. Last year, Acadiana High School finished the 2019 year with an undefeated regular season, and went on to win the state championship. Welch knows how to win games, and play his part so that his team can reach their full potential.
Laterrance Welch is as talented as any other highly touted cornerback in high school football right now, and will only continue to improve through his junior and senior year. Whatever school he decides to play for after his high school career, he could be that football program’s next historic lockdown cornerback.
