Lamar Washington is not necessarily unique in that he plays multiple high school sports, but he is unique in being one of the few talented athletes to have division one offers in multiple sports. The football and basketball star will have his choice of sport when going into college, but he has the talent to play either one. He plays at Jefferson High School in Oregon, where the team went 6-4 in 2019 and is looking to build on that in the coming year.
Lamar is a 6’4” and 220-pound linebacker, and his size has worked well for him on the field. He is constantly around the ball and making plays. As only a sophomore, in 6 recorded games, he had 42 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 2 interceptions. On a very small team with only 31 players in 2019, he stuck out as an impact player on a team with some great athletes and proved teams need to know where he is on the defensive side of the ball.
Washington is a guy that seems to thrive blitzing thru the line, as he has a very quick first step and regularly blows by blockers on his way to making plays in the backfield. This shows as he was averaging almost two tackles for loss a game. He showed the ability to make plays running right through the offensive line off the snap, but also by reading the play and then coming up to make the tackle. He also showed his ability to drop back in pass racking up two picks in his 6 games of action for the squad.
His recruitment has really picked up this summer, as he now has 7 division 1 offers in football. His offers are from Utah State, Nevada, Kansas, USC, Oregon State, Nebraska, and California. As only a sophomore with some very solid accolades in a 6 game year, Washington is sure to pick up even more offers in both sports.
On a Jefferson squad that is relatively small, Lamar was able to really show his abilities in only his second year with the team. Many of their top players were underclassmen in 2019, so they have a chance to take advantage of some experience and top talent in the coming year. Although they don’t have the massive numbers of some of their competitors, Jefferson is a team with multiple guys having offers to play at the next level. Washington is one of them, and with two more years at the high school level, he should continue to catch the eye of college recruits, both on the field and on the court.
