Austin Westlake has a rich tradition of elite quarterbacks that have played for their high school, but Kirkland Michaux becomes only the second since Drew Brees to help them win a state championship.
Austin Westlake (15-1) defeated Denton Guyer (14-2) 24-0 in front of 35,278 people at AT&T Stadium in the 6A Division 1 State Championship game on Saturday. It was the first shutout in a Texas 6A title game since 1998.
Michaux, a 6’5 215-pound senior, was the game’s Offensive MVP after throwing for 285 yards and 3 touchdown passes. In back-to-back weekends with everything on the line, Michaux was the difference maker that guided his team to victories.
Last week, Michaux broke 2 school records throwing for 7 touchdown passes and 8 total touchdowns for the game against Katy Taylor.
2019 FINAL SENIOR STATS
For the season, Michaux has completed 69.7% of his passes for 2,894 yards. He has a 44-8 touchdown to interception ration and has rushed for 407 yards and 7 touchdowns.
In 2018, Michaux was the backup quarterback behind Taylor Anderson, the District 25-6A MVP. Anderson threw for 6,026 career yards and 67 touchdowns. This is the main reason Michaux is flying way under the radar right now as a class of 2020 prospect.
FIRST YEAR AS THE STARTER
Michaux had one year as the starting quarterback to prove his value and he made the most of his opportunity going out with a state championship and the MVP trophy. Division 1 schools that did not get a quarterback in last week’s early signing period definitely need to take a hard look at Michaux.
EFN RATING AND VIDEO
Here at the Elite Football Network, Michaux has an EFN Player Rating of an 88. We project him as a small Power 5 offer prospect to a high Group 5 prospect. He has loads of upside and we think he has the ability to be a great college quarterback.
EFN EVALUATION
He has excellent size, showed that he can survey the field, and has the arm and accuracy to make all the throws. Kirkland has good mechanics and has the mobility in the pocket to sidestep pass rushers, get out of trouble, and make plays with his legs.
Michaux can roll out left or right and has the ability to extend the play and hit receivers in stride downfield. This is an underrated part of his game and a characteristic that quarterbacks need to have in their arsenal to be successful.
Even though he has not been rated by the top national recruiting sites and doesn’t have a Division 1 offer, he is going to have a lot of colleges pursue him down the stretch before the late signing period in early February.
